The story

How the world was found

Night fell in Wundoria. Mia and Toto climbed a grassy hilltop and lay back to look at the sky, and there above them hung a golden crescent moon with a smile on her face.

The dark had always seemed a little frightening. But Moon Smile showed them the stars, and the shapes between the stars, and the great big mystery of it all. And then she told them the secret: the mystery up there is the same mystery that is in here, inside you.

So the dark stopped being something to fear. It became a wide, soft place where you are held, and where being here is such fun.

A word from the author

“Bedtime was where I saw children most frightened, and most in need of a friend in the sky. Moon Smile is the night made kind. She does not chase the dark away, she smiles inside it. I hoped a child would look out of their window at night and find her there, keeping watch.”

Jaany

Draft for Jaany to replace in her own words: how this world came about, and what she hoped it would give a child.

Lines to keep

The words that do the work

“A great big mystery, the same mystery as me!”

The child and the universe are the same wonder. Not knowing everything stops being scary and becomes exciting.

“Being here is such FUN!”

The poem ends with a shout of joy, so the dark is left as something playful, not something to dread.

“The moon with her smile.”

Moon Smile is a she, and she is smiling. A child who pictures that smile over their bed sleeps more easily.
