How the world was found
A pink diamond lifted Mia high above a turquoise sea until she was face to face with Sun Sparkle, the smiling sun herself, who had been watching over her since the first world.
Sun Sparkle showed Mia the clouds. Some days, she said, clouds drift across and it looks as though the light has gone. Thoughts can be like that too, grey and passing. But the sun is always there behind them, shining just the same.
And then she told Mia the thing this world is for: you carry your own light. Clouds can hide your sparkle on some days, but they can never, ever put it out.
“Every child has days when they feel dull, when someone was unkind or they lost the game. I wanted them to have the sun as a picture of themselves: the clouds are real, but they pass, and the light underneath was never touched. It is a confidence that does not depend on winning.”
